Auditions: A Dog’s Life the Musical
7 p.m., July 14 and 15 (callbacks July 17 if needed)
This hilarious, warmhearted new musical directed by Jonathan Carbaugh with music direction by Sharon Hedges chronicles the joys and challenges of dog ownership. But just who owns whom? The show will be on stage Nov. 15-17 and 21-24.
When Joel adopts Jack the dog at the pound, he soon realizes life will never be the same. Dog parks, trips to the vet, separation anxiety – it’s all here in a celebration of the inseparable bond between man and mutt.
Auditions (18 years-plus only, please) will consist of cold readings from the script, a vocal selection, and movement (please dress comfortably with appropriate footwear). Accompanist provided, please bring sheet music of 16-32 bars. Please be prepared to list potential scheduling conflicts as the rehearsal schedule will be created based on cast availability.
Cast of Characters
JACK, tenor or high baritone to A, a sweet tempered, fairly simple dog. A mutt, he isn’t well trained but is very loyal and sees the good in things.
JOEL, baritone to F, is the show’s lone human. He’s vulnerable and oddly charming, somewhat abrupt, self-involved, and closed off to life.
BIG DOG, baritone to G, is an older and wiser dog who is a bit more cynical about things than the others. He’s big but doesn’t throw it around casually.
LITTLE DOG, mezzo, with a belt, to F, is a diminutive dog with an anger-management problem. She talks too much, a bit overactive, nervous, and highly strung but is also sensitive and wants to be loved.
